Protecting Your Assets from Nursing Home Costs

Nursing home care is one of the largest expenses a Kentucky family can face, and most families only learn how it is paid for when a parent or spouse already needs it. By then, decisions that deserve months of thought have to be made in a matter of days.

Join attorney S. Thomas Hamilton for a free evening seminar on how Kentucky families plan ahead: how long-term care is paid for, how Medicaid eligibility and the five-year look-back work, the legal tools that can protect a home and a lifetime of savings, and what can still be done when care is needed now.

When: Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at 6:00 PM
Where: Old Kentucky Home Country Club, 417 E. Stephen Foster Avenue, Bardstown, KY 40004
Cost: Free, with registration

Why Families Plan Before a Crisis

Many families assume Medicare or a supplemental policy will pay for a nursing home. In most cases, it won’t. Medicare covers only a limited, short-term stay in a skilled nursing facility after a qualifying hospital stay, and it does not pay for ongoing custodial care. When that care stretches into months or years, the cost usually falls on the family until savings have been spent down far enough for Medicaid to step in.

It doesn’t have to happen that way. Kentucky law gives families legitimate, ethical ways to protect assets and qualify for long-term care benefits, and the earlier a family plans, the more it can protect. Even when someone is already in a nursing home, there is often still something meaningful that can be done. This seminar walks through those options in plain English, so your family can make decisions with clear information instead of under pressure.

What You’ll Learn

In one evening, you’ll get plain-English answers to the questions families ask us most about long-term care.

01

How nursing home care is really paid for

What Medicare, supplemental policies and long-term care insurance actually cover, and why so many families end up paying out of pocket for care they assumed was covered.

02

How Kentucky Medicaid long-term care works

Who qualifies, which assets count and which don’t, and what the five-year look-back means for gifts and transfers you’ve already made or are thinking about making.

03

Protecting your home and savings

The legal tools Kentucky families use to protect assets, including trusts and other planning strategies, and the common do-it-yourself moves that can backfire.

04

Protecting the spouse who stays at home

How the law protects a husband or wife who remains at home when the other spouse needs care, and the planning options available only to married couples.

05

The documents that keep your family in control

How a durable power of attorney and health care directives let the right people act for you, and why a generic form is often too narrow to carry out real planning.

06

What can still be done when care is needed now

Not every family gets to plan years ahead. If a parent or spouse is already in a nursing home, or about to be, crisis planning can often still protect a meaningful portion of the family’s assets. We’ll explain how it works and why acting quickly matters.

The seminar offers general information, not legal advice for your specific situation. If you’d like to talk through your own circumstances afterward, you can schedule a free initial consultation with our office.

Who Should Attend

This seminar is for anyone who wants to understand their options before a health crisis forces a decision, including:

  • ◦Adult children of aging parents. If you’re starting to help Mom or Dad with bills, appointments or decisions, you’ll learn what to plan for and what to ask.
  • ◦Retirees and those nearing retirement. Find out how to protect the home and savings you’ve worked a lifetime to build.
  • ◦Married couples. Learn how to protect the spouse at home if one of you needs long-term care.
  • ◦Families facing a nursing home decision now. Understand the options that may still be available, even on a short timeline.
  • ◦Caregivers and agents under a power of attorney. Learn what your role allows, and the steps that protect the person you’re helping.

You’re welcome to bring a spouse, adult child or anyone else who helps with family decisions. Just include them when you reserve your seat.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About the Seminar

Is the seminar really free?

Yes. There is no charge to attend and no obligation to hire our firm. The seminar is our way of helping Central Kentucky families understand their options before they need them.

Do I need to register?

Yes, please. Registering helps us plan seating and materials, and it lets us reach you if anything about the event changes. It takes less than a minute with the form on this page, or you can call our office to register by phone.

Can I bring a family member?

Absolutely. Long-term care decisions are usually made together, so you’re welcome to bring a spouse, adult child or caregiver. Just include them in the number attending when you register.

Will I get advice about my own situation?

The seminar covers general information about Kentucky law and the planning options available to families. It isn’t legal advice for your specific circumstances, and attending doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship. If you’d like to discuss your own situation, you can schedule a free initial consultation with our office.

Is it too late if my loved one is already in a nursing home?

Usually not. Even when a family member already needs care, there are often legal options that can still protect a meaningful portion of the family’s assets. The seminar explains how that kind of planning works and why acting quickly matters.

What if I can’t make it on November 18?

Contact us and we’ll let you know about future seminar dates, or schedule a free initial consultation to talk through your situation one-on-one.
